Photos of a Red-eyed Vireo, the first one made by Steven Wytema on The Brownsberg in Suriname in July 2005, the second one made by Hans Gebuis in the Netherlands in October 1996. The bird is common in the forests of the interior of Suriname, often high up in the canopy of trees and singing. In Holland it is very rare, a vagrant from North-America, so this second picture is special. The young birds from North-America (like this one seems to be) don't have the very red eyes the adults have there. In Suriname the adults that breed there, have brown eyes. So their name doesn't seem to be very appropriate there and they are often called Chivi vireo and are a different (sub)species from their North-American family members. Otte Ottema recorded the sound of a chivi vireo in Suriname
Each small square indicates the observation of at least one (group) of these birds, the medium ones at least 4 observations on different days and the largest ones 10 or more. The color of each square indicates: blue for coastal area, yellow for savanna and red for rainforest.
