The first photo of a female Red-shouldered Tanager was made by Foek Chin Joe at Matta in Suriname in October 2005. Then come some pictures made in the birdcage of mr. Luchmun in Paramaribo by R.Ribot: Two pictures of a male: the red on the shoulder of this male is hard to see, but when it unfolds its wings, more red and white becomes visible. It also has white at the underside of his wings. The female (see first picture and the one below) doesn't resemble the male, it is more brown-gray above and gray-white below. The lower mandible is conspiciously light-colored with a black tip, for the male as for the female, the upper mandible is black.

The color of each square indicates: blue for coastal area, yellow for savanna and red for rainforest. Common in savanna (yellow) and uncommon in the the rainforest (red) and rare above 500 m, often at clearings.
