Photo of a bird flying on the river near New Amsterdam (in Suriname) in September made by Carla Out. Shown below is a Sandwich Tern above Aruba, a photo made by Greg Peterson in July 2009. The amount of yellow on the bill of birds in Suriname varies greatly, some are totally yellow and the one above seems totally black, probably a juvenile. In Suriname the Sandwich Tern is only reported from near the coast, often resting on sandbanks. There are not many observations of this tern in December and january in Suriname.

Each small square indicates the observation of at least one (group) of these birds, the medium ones at least 4 observations on different days and the largest ones 10 or more. The color of each square indicates: blue for coastal area, yellow for savanna and red for rainforest.
