Photo by J.H. Ribot, Walsrode 1998. And a beautiful bird
soaring above the Brownsberg, was photographed by Steven Wytema
in March 2005 and then one made by Tony Henneberg in Suriname.
This vulture is rather common in the interior, but is seldomly
seen along the coast. They usually soar high above the trees, but
with a bit of luck they can be found eating from a carcass inside
the forest. Dead animals are sometimes first found by other
vultures, but when a king vulture arrives it is the strongest of
them all and it can chase black or turkey vultures from a
carcass.

Each small square indicates the observation of at least one (group) of these birds, the medium ones at least 4 observations on different days and the largest ones 10 or more. The color of each square indicates: blue for coastal area, yellow for savanna and red for rainforest. In recent years it has been seen around Paramaribo.
