Black-crested antshrikeBirds in Suriname

Black-crested antshrike female Batara huppé, Choca, Hormiguero Copetón

Photos of a female (above) and two males black-crested antshrike, made by Foek Chin Joe in the north of Paramaribo, Charlesburg and Tourtonne, in June 2005. Then a picture by K. Dijkstra of a male seen from below and with a lot of black, made at Weg naar Zee in February 2007 and one by Louis des Tombe also in 2007. These antshrikes are common in bushes and gardens around Paramaribo and are also found farther inland in the forest. They are fast moving, searching for insects and small fruits. They build a nest of grasses in a fork of a low bush and can have eggs all year around (I have not found an report of a nest in October). Pairs sometimes sing a duet, maybe also on this recording.
