Crested Caracara in Nickerie

Two photos of a crested caracara, made by Dominiek Plouvier in Nickerie in December 2007 and April 2007 and below a photo by J.H. Ribot on Aruba in 2008. The Crested Caracaras are rather common in the west of the country, near the coast in the department of Nickerie and in Coronie. More to the east they are very rare, as they are in French Guyana to the east of Suriname. They are sometimes observed in the interior on open terrain and are rather common in the Sipaliwini savanna. They eat small animals and dead prey and harass other birds, so these are forced to drop their prey. As they find a lot of dead animals there, you can often see them walking like a large proud rooster along the road from Coronie to Nickerie (like in the uppermost picture).

Each small square indicates the observation of at least one (group) of these birds, the medium ones at least 4 observations on different days and the largest ones 10 or more. The color of each square indicates: blue for coastal area, yellow for savanna and red for rainforest.
