Purple gallinule

Purple gallinule

A real marsh bird, often sitting on plants that stick out of the water. When they do that in ricefields to reach for the riceseeds, they often break the stalks.
The first two photos were made by Dominiek Plouvier in Suriname. You can see the very long yellow toes they have to be able to walk on leaves that float in the water. Then follows a picture of a young purple gallinule, made by Foek Chin Joe in Suriname in 2005.
