Least grebe, young in Suriname

Photos of a least grebe, made by Foek Chin Joe on the Suriname river near Overbridge on January 25 2007 (above) and below one by Pascal Dubois in French Guyane (Côté Nature). Grebes are well adapted for swimming and diving, finding their food like small fish and insects or molluscs in water. The least grebe is rare in freshwater swamps in Suriname near the coast. Birds have also been found in ponds or rivers farther away from the coast (on the photos above for instance) as can be seen on the map below, even pairs of adults with young (up to 6). The second photo is of a juvenile.
