The first photo was made by Carla Out in Suriname, of a group of Brown Pelicans passing Weg naar Zee (October 2007).Then a photo made by Bas Spek of a pelican passing near the Warappakreek in January 2010. Below this text a photo made by Alexandre Renaudier in French Guiana, then two photos that were made by Greg Peterson on the coast of Aruba and four pictures also made at the coast of Aruba by Jan Hein Ribot in May 2008. Pelicans have been seen in all months of the year in Surinam, with a maximum in June, July and August. Small groups are regularly seen near Coppenamepunt. They fly low over the water and feed on fish which they catch by working together in small groups or by diving (in deeper water). The gull in the photo below is a Laughing Gull, trying to steal a fish from the biggest bird in the Dutch Antilles. During the breeding season adult Brown Pelicans have more brown on their neck. Such birds are seen in Suriname, but they have never been found breeding. A video of a brown pelican diving was made along the coast of Aruba by Ribot.

Each small square indicates the observation in Suriname of at least one (group) of these birds, the medium ones at least 4 observations on different days and the largest ones 10 or more. The color of each square indicates: blue for coastal area, yellow for savanna and red for rainforest. Often found in groups, sometimes up to 50-60 (Haverschmidt en de Vries Coppenamepunt and Herminaflats1964-1966).

The number of reported pelicans on the Suriname coast, summed over 50 years and grouped per month. Most observations were reported without the number of birds specified.
