Photo of a caged Lesser seedfinch or Picolet, made at the independence square in Paramaribo by Jan Hein Ribot. It is not easy to photograph this bird in the wild, they become rather rare and you hear them more often than see them. There aren't so many around as thirty years ago, but far from civilisation you can still find them. But the pressure on their population is high, as they are highly prized cagebirds in Suriname, like in Brazil. This is a sound of a lesser seedfinch, picolet, curiķ in the wild, recorded somewhat softly by Otte Ottema near the Tafelberg. An impression of the Onafhankelijkheidsplein in Paramaribo on sunday morning when there are contests between the owners of picolets and twatwa's can be seen on a video of picolets in a contest (8 MB), where you can hear them singing. The bird that sings the best, wins the contest for his owner (see the dutch page on the twatwa).
