Belted KingfisherBirds in Suriname

Belted Kingfisher

A female Belted Kingfisher, photographed on Aruba by Greg Peterson. The Belted Kingfisher was reported along the coast in Suriname for the first time in November 2009, just days after an annotated checklist of the birds of Suriname appeared (obviously without this bird). The Belted Kingfisher is a migrant from North America, that in South America is rarely seen anywhere but along the northern coasts of the continent. It has an almost white belly, unlike the larger Ringed Kinfisher, that is common in Suriname.

Each small square indicates the observation of at least one (group) of these birds, the medium ones at least 4 observations on different days and the largest ones 10 or more. The color of each square indicates: blue for coastal area, yellow for savanna and red for rainforest.
