Picture of a Russet-crowned crake, made by Foek Chin Joe near a house at Ma Retraite in December 2006. The red eyes are caused by the flashlight. The birds are often heard in the morning in overgrown plots in residential areas, but they stay mostly under cover. They prefer places with a lot of low vegetation, often near water but are also found on the savanne with the water farther away. The sound of a russet-crowned crake was taped by Jan Hein Ribot at the Leysweg in 1984.
Each small square indicates the observation of at least one (group) of these birds, the medium ones at least 4 observations on different days and the largest ones 10 or more. The color of each square indicates: blue for coastal area, yellow for savanna and red for rainforest.
