Photo of the blue and black male and the dark brown female of the Blue-black grosbeak made by Leo Olmtak in Paramaribo in 2009 and by Candy McManiman in the Raleigh Falls nature reserve in 2005. This grosbeak is a bird of wet places and can often be found on Fungu island in the thick undergrowth. It has a pleasant loud and simple whistle and because it stays in the undergrowth it is easier heard then seen. The adult male is shiny blue-black, it has black around the eyes and in wing and tail. The one above seems to be a young male and may be it is an escaped bird as it has a ragged tail. This is a sound of the Blue-black Grosbeak, recorded by Alexandre Renaudier near Mana in French Guiana just across the border.

Each small square indicates the observation of at least one (group) of these birds, the medium ones at least 4 observations on different days and the largest ones 10 or more. The color of each square indicates: blue for coastal area, yellow for savanna and red for rainforest.
