The first two photos were made by Candy McManiman on the Brownsberg in Suriname in 2005. After a long period without hunting the birds are less wary there and are often seen early in the morning walking on the forest floor. The curled feathers on their head are sometimes used for personal ornaments in Suriname. The other photos were made by KD Dijkstra and J.H. Ribot, also in Suriname. A video of two Black curassows early morning on a road on the Brownsberg is available (Ribot).

Each small square indicates the observation of at least one (group) of these birds, the medium ones at least 4 observations on different days and the largest ones 10 or more. The color of each square indicates: blue for coastal area, yellow for savanna and red for rainforest. Below a photo made by H. Robert in his garden in Paramaribo.
