The first two pictures were made by Carl Beel in Nickerie in
August 2009. Then two photos, an adult and a young Long-winged
Harrier, that were made by Dennis Binda, Weg naar Zee Suriname
August 2008. All black and white photos come from J.H. Ribot,
made in Wageningen Suriname 1979.
The Long-winged harrier has a rather small bill, long wings and a
banded tail. They are often seen flying low and slowly, or
gliding on their wings with the banded tail spread out a bit,
over marshy areas, over rice fields or wet grassy fields with
scattered bushes. They are fairly common in the coastal areas,
especially so in the ricefields in Nickerie. The main colors (for
the adult) are black and white. They eat small mammals and birds,
catching them by pouncing on them. The bird is not very shy and
will slowly glide past you on a short distance, moving almost
only his tail to steer. Sometimes big groups can be found, for
instance 30 in March 1980 in Nickerie (Ribot).

Each small square indicates the observation of at least one (group) of these birds, the medium ones at least 4 observations on different days and the largest ones 10 or more. The color of each square indicates: blue for coastal area, yellow for savanna and red for rainforest.
