First a photo made by Carl Beel in Nickerie in August 2009,
then one by Dominiek Plouvier, made in Suriname and one by Pascal
Dubois in French Guyane. Then two pictures of a bird, changing
from immature plumage to the black of the adult, made by Jan Hein
Ribot in the ricefields of Land van Dijk in Nickerie. And an
younger immature bird photographed by George Hageman near the
water on Fungu Island in February 2010.
The Great black hawk eats all kind of food: especially fishes,
but also mammals and they were seen by Haverschmidt to eat from a
dead cayman. It is a common bird in open country, especially in
the coastal area. In the flying bird below you see the small
whitish patch in the wings, and apart from the white in its tail,
the rest of the plumage of a adult is totally black. The last
picture was made by Suzanne Eeeltink in 2006

Each small square indicates the observation of at least one (group) of these birds, the medium ones at least 4 observations on different days and the largest ones 10 or more. The color of each square indicates: blue for coastal area, yellow for savanna and red for rainforest.
