Short-tailed hawk Buse ŕ queue courte, Gavilán Cola Corta, Buteo brachyurus

The first photo was made by Carl Beel, of a Short-tailed hawk circling above Paramaribo in November 2008. This hawk is only seldomly seen above the town. The second photo comes from Pascal Dubois in French Guyane (Côté Nature). Both pictures are from the light colored variant of this species where the white underparts contrast with the grayish-brown upperparts. A blackish morph has also been seen in Suriname. It seems to soar more often than to hunt from a perch.

Each small square indicates the observation of at least one (group) of these birds, the medium ones at least 4 observations on different days and the largest ones 10 or more. The color of each square indicates: blue for coastal area, yellow for savanna and red for rainforest.
