Photo of a pinnated heron/bittern by R. Plomp made in Coronie Suriname 1996 (in a fresh water swamp), sorry that I have no better picture available. It is a medium sized brown heron. The bird is maybe not uncommon in swamps, but from the records you cannot tell. There are only about 5 reports of this bird since 1965. It will eat fish, but Haverschmidt, who caught a couple of them, found it will also eat snakes and frogs.
Each small square indicates the observation of at least one of these birds, the medium ones at least 4 observations on different days and the largest ones 10 or more. The color of each square indicates: blue for coastal area, yellow for savanna and red for rainforest.
