The photos above of Sulphur-breasted Parakeets (Aratinga pintoi) were made by John Mittermeier in the Sipaliwini savanna in 2007. It is difficult to find this parakeet in Suriname, except for the savannas in the far south of the country, on the border with Brazil where they are a common sight. The birds of this species differs only minimally from the Sun Parakeet. Only recently they were considered one species and it was for a time unclear which of the two was found on the Sipaliwini. The Suphur-breasted Parakeet has no white around the eye and of course a yellow breast and only a bit of orange on the belly and flanks and much less yellow on the upper wing and back (compare with the two photos below of Sun parakeets made by Ribot in the Walsrode Zoo). It is found in Pará state in Brazil. The birds from Guyana are different and belong to the Sun Parakeet, Aratinga solstitialis. And so stray birds that were seen in Suriname far north from Sipaliwini, might have been Sun Parakeets (or may be escaped birds?).

Each small square indicates the observation of at least one (group) of these birds, the medium ones at least 4 observations on different days and the largest ones 10 or more. The color of each square indicates: blue for coastal area, yellow for savanna and red for rainforest.
