The photo above was made by Leo Olmtak in Zorg en Hoop,
Paramaribo in 2009 of a Red-and-green Macaw, probably an escaped
cagebird.
This macaw is seldom seen in the coastal region or the savanna of
Suriname. It seems to come to the coastal marshes only in very
dry years, Penard tells of large numbers of all macaws in 1897,
an very dry year. But normally it is only seen in the interior of
Suriname and only in small groups (an exceptional group of 15 was
seen near the Tafelberg in May 1999 by A. Tomson). It seems to be
rare nowadays also in the eastern half of Suriname, because of
hunting (Otte Ottema, Stinasu). Below are two pictures of
red-and-green macaws made by Carla out in Suriname in November
2007 and one by Eltjo Schut in a village along the Tapanahoni
river in March 2007. This last one is probably a young and kept
animal

Each small square indicates the observation of at least one (group) of these birds, the medium ones at least 4 observations on different days and the largest ones 10 or more. The color of each square indicates: blue for coastal area, yellow for savanna and red for rainforest. An extra photo on the next page.
